I’ve always liked listening to Robert Peston on the news and hoped that his talking style would cross over into his writing skills。 Fear not, he’s just as good。 A fast paced story。 Highly recommended

Superb story of Gil Peck, investigative journalist trying to seek the truth and also avenge the death of his beloved sister and treasury adviser。 Robert Peston brilliantly mixes the personal and the political in this face paced journey through grief and rage leading up to the 1997 election。 Familiar political and media figures of the time are thinly disguised and the line between Tony Blair and David Cameron is a very thin one in his portrayal of Johnny Todd and his new labour。 Unusually for a p Superb story of Gil Peck, investigative journalist trying to seek the truth and also avenge the death of his beloved sister and treasury adviser。 Robert Peston brilliantly mixes the personal and the political in this face paced journey through grief and rage leading up to the 1997 election。 Familiar political and media figures of the time are thinly disguised and the line between Tony Blair and David Cameron is a very thin one in his portrayal of Johnny Todd and his new labour。 Unusually for a political thriller, Gil is a beautifully drawn flawed hero and Peston is not afraid to create strong female characters and sometimes give them the best lines。。。 Jizzelica forever! 。。。more

Set in 1997, in the run up to a general election in Britain, our protagonist is a financial journalist called Gil Peck。 Believing that his work is the greatest priority in life, Gil has become estranged from his family as he focuses on bagging the biggest and most sensational political stories - regardless of who is involved。 But Gil is suddenly pulled back into the bosom of his family when his sister dies。 Claire worked at the Treasury and there are many rumours flying around after her death。 W Set in 1997, in the run up to a general election in Britain, our protagonist is a financial journalist called Gil Peck。 Believing that his work is the greatest priority in life, Gil has become estranged from his family as he focuses on bagging the biggest and most sensational political stories - regardless of who is involved。 But Gil is suddenly pulled back into the bosom of his family when his sister dies。 Claire worked at the Treasury and there are many rumours flying around after her death。 With a nose for a story and also suspicious about how Claire died, Gil launches his own investigation into a world of politics, money, corruption and murder。 For a story with so many important characters, Preston has kept up a rapid pace and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat。。 Due to his experiences as a political journalist, Preston has added a sense of authenticity to his novel and part of the fun is trying to recognize scenarios and characters。 This is my first book by Robert Preston and after finishing, I'm eager to read more of his work! Let's hope that he continues to write such exciting and page turning fiction。 。。。more
Lou,
The Whistleblower is an exciting and compulsively readable debut political thriller from the UK's foremost political journalist, ITV News' Political Editor Robert Peston。 It is the first in a proposed dulogy featuring avid cyclist and irascible journalist Gil Peck who very much enjoys sadistically weaponising people’s secrets and exposing them to the world in the form of a scoop。 Set in 1997 in the run-up to the election, it follows the political editor of a British broadsheet newspaper known as The Whistleblower is an exciting and compulsively readable debut political thriller from the UK's foremost political journalist, ITV News' Political Editor Robert Peston。 It is the first in a proposed dulogy featuring avid cyclist and irascible journalist Gil Peck who very much enjoys sadistically weaponising people’s secrets and exposing them to the world in the form of a scoop。 Set in 1997 in the run-up to the election, it follows the political editor of a British broadsheet newspaper known as The Financial Courier as he navigates the corridors of power to bag the biggest stories。 Gil's methods could be described as unconventional or even immoral and he is tenacious, arrogant, ruthlessly driven and wildly ambitious, and he knows this game like the back of his hand。 He is one of those people who are aptly described as being like a sledgehammer trying to crack a nut。 But when Gil’s estranged sister Clare dies in an apparent hit-and-run while out on her bike, he begins to believe it was no accident。 Clare knew some of the most sensitive secrets in government – could one of them have got her killed? As election day approaches, Gil follows the story into the dark web of interests that link politics, finance and the media。This is a richly detailed and superbly woven contemporary political thriller mixed with some family drama and a timely and page-turning thriller revolving around government conspiracies。 Gil isn't a particularly likeable character, but what he lacks in that department he makes up for by being a fascinating bloke who has a seemingly insatiable appetite for blowing up all politicians’ best-laid plans, regardless of party or ideological allegiance。 He enjoys controlling the narrative and wanders between the communities of politicians, financiers and businessmen, trading nuggets of information until he has enough to tell a tale that will pay handsomely。 Combining his unprecedented knowledge of the inner workings of politics, business and power together with his unparalleled sense of a good story - having broken so many over his career - Peston has crafted an insightful, sardonic, terrifying and excellently paced thriller with a distinctive cast of characters, ample use of twists and misdirection, and an engrossing plot centred around the interaction between media, powerful entities, politics, government and how the use of spin makes or breaks a story。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book。 A brilliant read。 Fast paced and gripping from the beginning。 A good plot and well drawn characters, though some were pretty awful people! Twists and turns throughout。 Highly recommended。
Naomi Wellings,
The Whistleblower is a fast-paced, detailed political thriller set in the late 90s on the cusp of a general election。 The main character is Gil Peck, a bike-riding journalist who will go to almost any length to secure a story。 I particularly loved his sidekick Jess, and his wider family were well portrayed。 The author clearly draws on his years of experience as a political journalist and the attention to detail draws you in - right down to the clothing he describes! Angie,
A gripping read。 As expected from this author, this book is full of insight into the murky world of politics and journalism。 From the start the story draws you back to 1997, on the cusp of the general election。 Gil Peck is a political editor who finds himself drawn into a family and political crisis when his sister is killed when knocked off her bike。 A brilliant read with characters who keep you captivated; no one is hugely likeable, many are downright horrible, and some are very relatable。 Gil A gripping read。 As expected from this author, this book is full of insight into the murky world of politics and journalism。 From the start the story draws you back to 1997, on the cusp of the general election。 Gil Peck is a political editor who finds himself drawn into a family and political crisis when his sister is killed when knocked off her bike。 A brilliant read with characters who keep you captivated; no one is hugely likeable, many are downright horrible, and some are very relatable。 Gil is forced to face his demons as he attempts to find out the truth about his sister’s death。 。。。more

Belinda Mitchell-Innes,
How incredibly good this is for a first novel。 I know he has written non-fiction and is a journalist so he knows how to tell a story, but, this is a very impressive read。 There are more shifts and turns then a Rubik cube crossed with a Russian doll。Set in the 90's when new labour came to town it's a thriller/murder mystery and a fascinating melange of coke sniffing journalists, evil capitalists and corrupt politicians。 Unusually all politicians are corrupt including the Labour party。 That makes How incredibly good this is for a first novel。 I know he has written non-fiction and is a journalist so he knows how to tell a story, but, this is a very impressive read。 There are more shifts and turns then a Rubik cube crossed with a Russian doll。Set in the 90's when new labour came to town it's a thriller/murder mystery and a fascinating melange of coke sniffing journalists, evil capitalists and corrupt politicians。 Unusually all politicians are corrupt including the Labour party。 That makes it sound like it might be rather clichéd but somehow he manages to avoid this。 Maybe through the excellent characterisation。Its a story of how power, and the hope of power, corrupts and how 'absolute power corrupts absolutely'。 Interestingly that quotation came from a politician。What also comes through strongly is how important the press are in being able to duck and dive when it comes to holding politicians, famous people and businesses to account。It ends on a bit of a cliff hanger。 It will be interesting to see if there is a sequel。If you loved Robert Harris and 'The Ghost', Mick Herron and 'Slow Horses' and the later Le Carre this is for you。 I highly recommend it and read it over a couple of days。 I was sent a pre-publication proof to read 。。。more
